Security first: internal border controls in the Schengen area until June 2025

Several Schengen countries, including Germany, have introduced temporary internal border controls for security purposes and to combat irregular migration.

In early November 2024, several Schengen countries, including Germany, Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Slovenia and Sweden, introduced temporary internal border control measures. These measures, aimed at enhancing national security, will remain in place until March-June 2025 in response to growing problems with irregular migration.

Under the amended Schengen Border Code, internal border controls are allowed in exceptional situations, such as major public health emergencies or terrorist threats. This means that although there have traditionally been no border checks inside the Schengen area, such measures can be introduced as a temporary response to difficult circumstances.

As of December 9, 2024, the Netherlands will also begin temporary border checks at its internal land borders, which will last six months and can be extended if necessary.

The internal controls primarily affect travelers traveling by international bus or train. Border guards may conduct passport checks, making travel between countries less free and more difficult.

In addition, travelers from non-EU countries should be especially careful about the expiration dates of their visas, and carry the necessary documents proving the purpose of entry to avoid delays or complications. It is also important to remember that a passport must remain valid for at least three more months after the intended departure from the Schengen area.

Failure to comply with these rules can result in serious consequences, including fines, deportation and future entry bans. Travelers are advised to plan their trips carefully and comply with all regulations for a safe and comfortable stay in Schengen countries.
