UK introduces electronic ETA authorization for citizens of 83 visa-free countries
Following the successful implementation of the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system in the UK at the end of 2023, the UK government has announced the expansion of the program to visa-free countries in the EU, North and South America. The introduction of ETA is part of reforms (post-Brexit) aimed at improving border security controls and managing the migration flow of foreign nationals.
The electronic ETA system is now in place for citizens of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
It should be clarified that the ETA permit does not replace visas or residence permits and is necessary only for citizens of visa-free countries to stay in the country for a period not exceeding 180 days. The permit is valid for 2 years (or until the expiration of the passport, if it expires earlier) and allows multiple entries within the established period of stay.
Electronic ETA permit must be issued to foreign nationals planning to visit the UK for tourism, short-term visits to relatives or friends, business travelers for a business visit or business trip, as well as transit passengers - ETA will be required even if the person does not plan to leave the airport.
Thus, beginning January 8, 2025, an electronic travel authorization (ETA) will be required for travelers from 49 countries and territories, with permit applications beginning November 27, 2024.
As of March 5, 2025, the ETA system will be open for registration for European citizens, and will become mandatory for travel as of April 2, 2025.
The application procedure for an electronic authorization is quite simple, the ETA can be applied for online by first providing a photo and personal information, including the purpose and dates of travel.
