Electronic ETA in Thailand: new entry regulations from December 1, 2024 for citizens of visa-free countries
From December 1, 2024, Thailand will launch an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system for travelers from visa-exempt countries.
Under the current visa-free entry rules, citizens of 93 countries can stay in Thailand without a visa for 60 days and extend their stay for another 30 days while in the country.
Citizens of these countries will now need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter Thailand, regardless of the port of entry:
This initiative is designed to simplify immigration procedures by optimizing the control of arriving citizens and speeding up the entry clearance process for tourists who do not need a visa. The new system is expected to allow travelers to pass through border control faster with automated passport gates via QR code.
As part of the ETA permit integration process, by summer 2025, the system will be finally operational on the official e-Visa website, this will greatly simplify the application process, for anyone wishing to visit Thailand.
ETA e-permit validity period:
The ETA e-permit will be valid for 60 days with an option to extend for another 30 days once per trip. The e-permit will be approved for single entry, and will require re-issuance for each new visit.
More details on the application process will be released closer to the launch of the system.
