Hong Kong introduces mandatory online submission of visa applications from January 2025

The Hong Kong Immigration Department (ImmD) has announced a major update to its immigration system: from January 17, 2025, all persons applying for visas or entry and extension of stay permits under a number of schemes will be required to do so exclusively online. This innovation applies to categories such as the General Employment Policy (including both employment and investment as entrepreneurs), the scheme for the admission of talents and professionals from Mainland China, the capital investment entry scheme, training, working vacation program and residence as dependents.

Under the new procedure, applications submitted in person, by mail or through application boxes will no longer be accepted. The move to e-services is aimed at simplifying the application process, reducing waiting times and increasing transparency in processing documents.

Applicants will be able to go through the entire process online, including applying, paying and receiving the e-visa, via a mobile app or the Hong Kong government's official website. There will also be an option to upload additional documents and track the status of their application once submitted.

While the move to an online process promises to improve convenience for users, it remains to be seen whether it will result in shorter processing times. However, the eligibility criteria and approval processes for the various visa programs will remain the same.

The change is part of the government's broad strategy to modernize the immigration system and improve services for citizens and residents.
