Australia announced a new visa for professionals with in-demand skills from December 7

In December 2023, the Australian Government unveiled a new migration strategy aimed at reforming the current system. A key element of this strategy will be the introduction of a new Skills in Demand visa, which will replace the Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa. The new visa is expected to provide greater flexibility for both skilled workers and employers.

The Australian Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that the Skills in Demand visa will be introduced on December 7, 2024. This visa can be issued for up to four years. An important addition to this initiative will be the Core Skills Occupations List (CSOL), which will apply to the new 'Core Skills' strand of the Skills in Demand visa.

The CSOL is a single consolidated list based on labor market analysis and consultation with stakeholders including Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA). It will provide access to temporary skilled migration for 456 occupations covering a wide range of industries such as health, technology and engineering, construction and trade, and education.

The new visa system also aims to better target high-priority and non-critical demand occupations. It aims to simplify application processes and provide clearer pathways to permanent residence for migrants.

With the introduction of this reform, the Australian government hopes to attract the skilled professionals needed to sustain and grow the country's economy.
