Expanded opportunities for seasonal workers: New Zealand introduces new temporary visa
The New Zealand Immigration Service has announced the introduction of a new temporary visa specifically designed for seasonal workers. The decision is designed to meet the growing demand for seasonal labor in various sectors of the country's economy. For example, it could be planting or harvesting crops, peak season at ski resorts.
The new visa will give foreign nationals the opportunity to work legally in New Zealand for nine months. To obtain a visa, applicants must meet a number of requirements, including reaching the age of eighteen, having at least four months of work experience in the profile and willingness to start work no later than May 31, 2025.
Special attention is paid to working conditions. Employers wishing to hire foreign seasonal workers are required to be accredited and guarantee their employees a working week of at least 30 hours and a wage not lower than the established minimum of NZ$29.66 per hour, as well.
The new temporary visa is for a wide range of professionals in industries such as:
- Agriculture: Farmers are in dire need of contractors to harvest crops, as favorable weather conditions are short-lived.
- Winter sports: With the start of the ski season, there is an increased need for experienced instructors and ski raft operators.
- Winemaking: V ineyards await their masters at harvest time to create exquisite wines.
- Forestry: Tree planting workers are especially in demand during certain periods when climatic conditions are optimal for planting seedlings.
- Extreme tourism: Jet boat and bungee jumping operators are needed during the warm season when tourists actively use these services.
To apply for a visa, foreign nationals need to apply to the migration office by March 31, 2025.
