Major changes to the New Zealand student visa
Significant changes to the student and work visa rules for international students in New Zealand have recently been announced. These changes relate to the length of study and the requirements for obtaining a work visa after graduation.
Students must now complete at least 30 weeks of full-time study in an accredited programme to be able to apply for a work visa. It is important to note that time spent preparing for the exam counts as study weeks, while holidays and time spent correcting unsatisfactory results do not count as study weeks. This requirement is mandatory for those intending to apply for a New Zealand work visa under the PSWV scheme. These measures are aimed at simplifying the visa application process and encouraging students to pursue quality studies, providing them with more career opportunities in the country.
Due to the expected surge in student visa applications as the peak season approaches, New Zealand authorities strongly recommend applying at least three months before the expected date of travel. Students who have prepared earlier can apply as soon as they have collected all the required documents.
Also, fees for student visas and post-graduation work visas will increase significantly from 1 October 2024. These changes are designed to better cover the cost of processing visa applications and help with New Zealand's economic recovery.
Previously, New Zealand's immigration system was heavily subsidised by taxpayers. The revised visa fees now more accurately reflect the cost of processing each type of visa. As fees can vary depending on where you apply, it is important to find out up-to-date information in advance. However, visa fee waiver agreements with some countries will remain in place, and exemptions for refugees and victims of domestic violence will remain in place.
