Seychelles extends Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for arrivals by sea

Seychelles is changing its entry rules for travelers arriving in the country by sea. Previously exempted from the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) requirement, travelers arriving in Seychelles by any means of maritime transport must now apply for an ETA permit before entering the islands.

Until recently, the electronic entry permit only applied to foreign nationals traveling to Seychelles by air. Now this requirement is extended to include those disembarking on the islands from cruise ships, yachts and other private vessels.

According to Seychelles authorities, these reforms are part of an enhanced security policy aimed at ensuring closer monitoring of visitors while making border crossings easier.

The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system is a similar border control measure that is being actively implemented in other countries, including Kenya, Israel and the European Union, which is launching its own electronic travel authorization system as part of the Visa Waiver Program in 2025.

The procedure for obtaining an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is the same for all travelers. The application must be submitted online on the official portal, through a mobile application or through an accredited visa agency.

For this purpose, the following data must be prepared:

  • Passport (personal data) and a photo in electronic form.
  • Travel documents (airline or cruise reservation).
  • Proof of accommodation (e.g. hotel reservation).
  • Data for customs declaration as well as health (this information is also completed online).
  • Any additional documents at your discretion can be uploaded to support the ETA application.

It is recommended to apply for an ETA at least 30 days prior to arrival in Seychelles.

Travelers can present the validated ETA permit digitally upon arrival at any port of entry in the country. This innovation is both a response to security concerns and a step to better accommodate the ever-growing number of tourists.
