Entry requirements for Nepal: visas and travel documents

For Germans, Austrians, all other EU citizens, Swiss, and Turks, a valid visa is required to enter Nepal. The entry rules for Nepal also include a passport requirement.

Identity documents must be valid for 6 months from the moment of crossing the border of the Asian country that does not have access to the sea. Temporary passports and children's passports with a photo are accepted by Nepalese immigration authorities. Entry into the country with an identity card is not possible. Due to rapid external changes, it is especially important to ensure that young children are clearly recognizable in the photo on the identity document. In children's passports, a photo can usually be inserted for a small fee. Since June 2012, it is prohibited to include minors in their parents' passports.

Visas and ETA in Nepal

Entry into Nepal

Nepal offers various entry options for foreign citizens, including traditional visas and the ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) system.

Tourist visa remains a popular way to enter Nepal. It can be obtained upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or at other border points. Tourist visas are available for 15, 30, or 90 days, and their cost varies depending on the length of stay.

The ETA system for Nepal is a pre-entry authorization that can be obtained online before the trip. ETA simplifies the entry process and reduces waiting time at the airport. To obtain ETA, you need to fill out an online form, provide a copy of your passport, and a recent digital photo. After approval, the ETA is valid for 15 days from the date of issue.

Business visa is required for conducting business activities in Nepal. Additional documents, including an invitation from a Nepalese company, are needed for its processing.

Citizens of most countries, including Germany, can use either the ETA system or obtain a visa upon arrival.

It is important to note that having a valid passport with a validity of at least 6 months is a mandatory requirement for entry into Nepal, regardless of the chosen method of obtaining entry permission.

Traveling with Children in Nepal

Parents and child

Traveling to Nepal with children is an exciting adventure, full of unforgettable experiences and discoveries. However, it is important to prepare for the trip to make it as comfortable and safe as possible for all family members. Nepal attracts tourists with its diverse nature and cultural attractions, but parents need to consider special rules and requirements when traveling with children.

For children traveling alone, a written permission from legal guardians in English is required. This document must be signed and certified by both parents. For minors traveling with only one parent, it is also recommended to have permission from the second guardian. This will help avoid potential issues with border services and make the trip smoother.

In addition, when entering Nepal, you will need to present a ticket for exiting the country. Travel history will not be sufficient proof, you must have full tickets, whether it's plane tickets, train tickets, or bus tickets, confirming your intention to leave the country. This requirement is especially important to consider when planning a trip with children to avoid delays at the border.

It is also important to remember the need for vaccination. It is recommended to get vaccinated against hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and tetanus to protect children from potential risks. Nepal is a country with unique nature and active recreational opportunities, so preparing for the trip will help make it safe and memorable.

Ways to Apply for a Visa in Nepal

Nepal mountain

As far as we know, there are three ways to obtain a visa in Nepal. The classic way is to submit documents through the Nepalese embassy in Berlin or the honorary consulate in Nepal. Nepalese consulates responsible for issuing entry permits are located in Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, and Stuttgart. If travelers submit their application to the diplomatic representation themselves or entrust it to a visa agency, they will receive a visa confirmation in their passport before departure.

The situation is different with the so-called visa on arrival, which foreign tourists can only obtain at the airport. The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises travelers to obtain a visa in advance in Germany due to the long waiting times at the Nepalese border control. Obtaining a visa before the trip also allows to timely resolve possible issues in the application process, for example, if not all requirements for entry into Nepal are met.

The third way to obtain a Nepalese visa is only available for entry through Tribhuvan Airport. According to the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, air travelers have the option of online visa application, although there is no reliable experience yet. The contact person for possible visa extension on-site is the Immigration Department in Kathmandu.
