Bhutan simplifies entry formalities for tourists: abolition of travel insurance and new entry rules

The Kingdom of Bhutan, known for its unique landscapes and philosophy, decides to simplify entry procedures for tourists. Due to improved sanitary conditions and reduced travel restrictions, as of April 23, 2024, the purchase of travel insurance is no longer required to enter Bhutan. This decision was taken by the Ministry of Tourism of Bhutan to make traveling easier for tourists.

Travel insurance is no longer a prerequisite to obtain an e-visa to Bhutan, however, the Ministry of Tourism continues to recommend the purchase of insurance as a precautionary measure. This advice remains valid, especially in case of unforeseen emergencies that may arise while traveling abroad.

Recent changes to Bhutan's entry regulations emphasize the kingdom's commitment to creating a comfortable environment for tourists. Along with this, e-visa applications still require payment of the visa itself, as well as a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of $100 per day per adult (children are given discounts).

It is important to note that applying for an e-visa is mandatory for most foreigners, including citizens of all countries except for residents of Bangladesh, India and the Maldives. After obtaining an e-visa, travelers must present a scanned copy of their passport and a photograph at a checkpoint upon entering Bhutan.

Tourism industry officials in Bhutan continue to work to recover from the pandemic, implementing strict security measures and protocols to ensure the well-being of travelers. The simplification of entry procedures into Bhutan is another step towards creating a comfortable environment for visitors to the kingdom.
