Planning a trip to the UK? Don't forget the mandatory ETA from January 2025
From January 2025, travelers from the 48 countries eligible for visa-free entry to the UK will be required to obtain an advance travel authorization (ETA) before traveling. This innovation affects tourists and business travelers on short trips, as well as those planning to transit through the UK.
The ETA permit will be valid for two years and will allow multiple entries. Each traveler, including infants, will need to have their own permit, which can be issued on their behalf.
ETAs can be applied for via the official UK government website or mobile app. The application will require a valid passport, a digital photo and basic travel details. The processing time for applications is on average 72 hours, however it is recommended to apply early.
Citizens of 48 non-European countries who need to issue an ETA from January 8, 2025
From April 2, 2025, the requirement will also apply to European nationals. Travelers will be able to apply for electronic travel authorization to the UK from March 5, 2025. The authorities hope that the introduction of ETAs will simplify border controls and improve security.
UK residents and those who already hold valid UK visas do not need to apply for an ETA.
