Japan speeds up implementation of JESTA electronic travel authorization system for tourists

Japan, a country of unique culture and modern technologies, continues to gain popularity among tourists from around the world. Each year, the number of travelers is growing. To cope with this influx of visitors and improve the quality of service, the government of Japan announced in September 2024 the introduction of the Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorization (JESTA)

The system, originally planned to be implemented by 2030, will now be implemented significantly earlier. It is designed to prevent delays for travelers entering Japan for a period of 14 to 90 days, as well as for more efficient management of the growing influx of tourists. The system will allow for advanced checks on traveler information, provide more accurate forecasts of tourist flows, and reduce waiting time at the border.

According to the new rules, citizens of 71 countries who are eligible for visa-free entry into Japan for up to 90 days will need to fill out an online application for entry permission (JESTA) before departure.

When applying, travelers will need to provide their personal data and itinerary details. Additional requirements, such as application fees and supporting documents, will be announced after the official launch of the system.
