Canada updates Express Entry program: new priorities in 2025
The Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced significant changes to the Express Entry program for 2025. This electronic system, designed to manage applications from skilled workers seeking to become permanent residents of Canada, will now focus on new categories of professions.
One of the key changes is the introduction of a new category, "Education", which includes five teaching-related professions. At the same time, the "Transport" category has been completely excluded from selections, reflecting the changing needs of the Canadian labor market.
The following professions have been added to the new "Education" category:
- Preschool educators and assistants
- Elementary school and kindergarten teachers
- Elementary and middle school teacher assistants
- High school teachers
- Instructors for people with disabilities
This addition aims to meet the growing demand for skilled educators in light of the increasing number of students in the country.
The priorities of the Express Entry program will focus on skills, language proficiency, and work experience in priority sectors. Candidates proficient in French will have an advantage when submitting their applications.
In addition, IRCC expanded the "Healthcare" category, adding professions related to social services that will help address healthcare and community support issues. These include family doctors, practicing nurses, dentists, pharmacists, psychologists, and manual therapists.
The Express Entry program includes the following categories of professions:
- Healthcare and social services professions
- Agriculture and agri-food professions
- Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions
- Trades professions
- Education professions
However, priority for receiving Invitations to Apply (ITA) will be given to professions in healthcare and social services, trade, and education.
These changes reflect Canada's economic and demographic goals aimed at increasing the number of workers in critical fields.
