German citizens can apply for an ETA to the UK from March 5, 2025
From March 5, 2025, citizens of Germany and other European countries and territories can already apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to the United Kingdom.
This step marks the final stage of implementing the ETA system, which allows visa-exempt travelers to apply for entry into the United Kingdom online.
The ETA system was introduced in November 2023, and in January 2024, the authorization was extended to more than 40 countries, including citizens of the USA, Australia, and many others.
From April 2, 2025, having an approved ETA will be mandatory for all those who are eligible for visa-free entry into the country. This authorization will be valid for two years and allow multiple entries. Each traveler, including children, will require a separate authorization.
With an approved ETA, citizens will be able to visit the UK for tourism, to meet family and friends, for business, to participate in short-term educational courses, or for transit trips (if border control clearance is required).
If an ETA application is rejected, the applicant will receive information on the reasons for refusal and will be able to submit a new application. However, in case of rejection, there is no appeal process, and obtaining a visa will be required for further entry.
Travelers are exempt from registration if they are transiting through the UK and staying at the airport, or if they already have an approved visa or are a resident of the United Kingdom, including citizens of Ireland.
Foreign citizens must now plan their trips in advance and submit online applications for an ETA before flying to the UK.
This innovation aims to enhance border security and prevent the entry of individuals who pose a threat to the country.
