New Zealand has updated visa rules: visitor visa holders can work remotely in the country

New Zealand has updated its visa policy, which now allows foreign tourists to work remotely for overseas employers while in the country. The new rules came into force on January 27, 2025. They are aimed at developing tourism and strengthening the country's economy.

Under the new conditions, such categories of foreign nationals as tourists, citizens visiting family, long-term visitor visa holders and NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authorization) holders will be able to legally engage in remote work without violating visa rules.

However, it is important to note that visitor visa holders will not be able to work for New Zealand employers or provide services to local businesses. All activities must be carried out remotely and do not require physical presence at the workplace in New Zealand.

This innovation is aimed at attracting digital nomads and creating more favorable conditions for those who want to combine work and recreation in the picturesque parts of the country. However, tourists planning to stay in New Zealand for more than 90 days are advised to pay attention to the possible tax implications. In such cases, it is worth consulting tax advisors or familiarizing yourself with local tax rules.

The changes to the visa policy underscore New Zealand's desire to strengthen its position as an attractive destination for digital nomads, alongside countries such as Spain, Portugal, UAE, Thailand and many others. Prime Minister Lacson is confident that boosting tourism will be key to growing the economy, creating new jobs and improving public services such as health and education.
