Tanzania announces plans to abolish visa on arrival: important details for travelers
The recent uncertainty over the possible abolition of visa on arrival in Tanzania from January 30, 2025 has caused concern among potential tourists. In response to questions, the country's Department of Immigration has clarified the situation by stating that the visa on arrival will remain available at all points of entry for citizens of many eligible countries. However, the department has also announced its intention to suspend the issuance of visas on arrival for the time being by November 30, 2024 in order to improve the Electronic Visa Application Service (E-VISA) and increase its overall efficiency.
The Department of Migration Policy assured that travelers will still be able to take advantage of this entry option, but noted the benefits of applying for an electronic visa (e-Visa) in advance.
According to the Department of Immigration, obtaining an e-Visa can significantly reduce waiting times and prevent delays on arrival, including avoiding the hassle of obtaining a visa on arrival.
The e-Visa system is available to nationals of most countries with which Tanzania has a visa regime, including all countries in Europe, the Americas, Australia and others.
The e-Visa to Tanzania is issued online, grants the right to stay for up to 90 days and covers both the mainland and the semi-autonomous region of Zanzibar.
As a reminder, additional travel insurance is mandatory for anyone planning to visit Zanzibar from October 1, 2024. A policy from the local Zanzibar insurance company (Zanzibar Insurance Corporation) is designed to ensure that all visitors are insured during their stay.
Travelers are strongly advised to check the current visa requirements and regulations through official sources in advance to avoid misunderstandings when entering the country.
