Turkey invites freelancers: conditions and benefits of the new visa for digital nomads
In April 2024, Turkey announced plans to introduce a visa for digital nomads, which will come into effect on October 1, 2024. It is already possible to apply for and receive a special certificate that confirms a foreign citizen's status as a digital nomad. The program is developed by the Turkish Tourism Promotion and Development Agency (TGA), under the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Turkey aims to attract freelancers from other countries by offering them convenient working conditions and cultural leisure opportunities in cities such as Istanbul, Dalaman in Mugla province and Izmir. According to the government, these regions offer the best conditions for remote work and cultural and historical tourism.
Citizens of the following countries can apply for a visa for digital nomads to Turkey:
To apply for a visa, the applicant must meet the following criteria:
- Age between 21 and 55 years old;
- Having a contract if the applicant works for a company (excluding companies registered in Turkey), or having a contract if self-employed (again, excluding Turkish companies);
- Minimum income of $3,000 per month or $36,000 per year;
- Higher education.
The visa application process begins by applying for a “digital nomad” certificate through the Ministry of Culture portal. This certificate will be the basis for applying for a visa at a Turkish consulate or visa center.
Unlike tenancy-based residence permit holders, digital nomads will be treated as full tax residents in Turkey and will be taxed at standard Turkish rates.
