Registration in Uzbekistan

Mandatory registration for foreigners in Uzbekistan

Registration in Uzbekistan is mandatory for all foreign citizens, regardless of whether they require a visa or not. This rule applies to both tourists and business travelers.
All foreign travelers staying in Uzbekistan for more than 3 days are required to register within the first 72 hours after entering the country.

If you are staying in a hotel, the hotel administration will handle the registration of your passport. If you are staying in private accommodation, such as with family members, friends or acquaintances, you and your host are responsible for registering and presenting your documents (passport and visa). The Federal Foreign Office does not recommend obtaining proof of registration from third parties to avoid problems when leaving the country.

When entering the country on a tourist visa, registration takes place only through the hotel - the hotel staff conducts the registration and returns the passport after processing. If a traveler decides to stay in a private house, the owner is obliged to register him at the local department of migration services.

It is important to note that persons who enter the country on a tourist visa and choose not to stay in a hotel risk violating the visa regime, which may result in deportation. A tourist visa cannot be changed to a visitor or private visa in Uzbekistan, and changing the visa category is only possible through consulates outside the country.

Where to register

The contact point for registration in Uzbekistan is the district office of the Department of Entry and Exit (UVViOG), formerly known as the OVIR. It is this institution that deals with the registration of foreign nationals, as well as the issuance of invitations for those applying for a visa by invitation. Hosts where foreign nationals stay are required to register them with the local UVViOG. In the case of visa by invitation, the inviting party must obtain a notarized letter of invitation.

What to keep in mind when traveling in and out of Uzbekistan

When traveling within Uzbekistan, after registering with UVViOG, you will receive a registration document that is required to purchase tickets for domestic travel, such as airline tickets or train tickets. You should always carry this document with you, as you may be asked to present it when purchasing travel tickets.
The registration document is also required when leaving the country. At the border you will need to show it along with your passport to confirm your legal stay in Uzbekistan during your visit.

What are the consequences for tourists who fail to register upon entry

If you fail to register in Uzbekistan by the deadline, you may face serious consequences. Violation of this obligation may result in fines, deportation and possible ban on re-entry into the country in the future. Given the strictness of local regulations, foreign nationals are strongly advised to follow the registration instructions of the authorities to avoid problems with the law and to comply with visa regulations.

Additional requirements for travelers to Uzbekistan

Foreign travelers in Uzbekistan should carry their passport and visa at all times to confirm the legality of their stay. In case of unforeseen circumstances, if the visa expires, travelers should immediately contact the local authorities of Uzbekistan before the visa expires. This requires applying for an exit visa, which allows them to legally leave the country. Usually, the application can only be submitted in the capital city of Tashkent.
What documents are needed to extend the visa and whether it is possible in specific cases, is specified in the local migration authorities.
Further information on the visa regime and obligations for foreigners can be obtained from Uzbek embassies, the Federal Foreign Office or the German Embassy in Tashkent.
