Canada has updated the guidelines for considering a temporary resident visa for foreign nationals
Immigration Canada has updated its policy on the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), which allows nationals of a visa-requiring country to enter Canada for tourism, business, study or transit purposes. Previously, the TRV temporary resident visa was issued for multiple entries, generally with a maximum validity of up to 10 years (or until the expiration of the passport if it expires sooner).
Under the approved temporary resident visa guidance, immigration officers will now have discretion to decide whether to issue a single-entry or multiple-entry visa, as well as its validity period. These changes will not affect previously issued visas, but will be taken into account when considering new temporary resident visa applications from foreign nationals.
The grounds that will be taken into account when considering a visa application include the applicant's individual circumstances, purpose of travel, financial ability to cover the costs of living in Canada, as well as health, medical conditions and connection to the home country.
In addition, for multiple-entry visas, officers may decide the duration of the visa according to other factors such as the applicant's status in the country of current residence or economic or political conditions in that country.
These changes in visa policy are part of Canada's Immigration Plan 2025, which aims to reduce permanent and temporary immigration to Canada and strengthen measures to manage the flow of migrants into the country.
