Visas for education and training in Thailand

The "ED" visa type, also commonly referred to as a student visa Thailand or education visa, is aimed at pupils, students, lecturers, professors and teachers. To summarize: All foreign persons who visit an educational institution in Thailand to learn or teach there require a visa for education and training. In addition, the "ED" visa type functions as an internship visa if the applicant is enrolled at a university in their home country during their stay in Thailand. The tourist visa is not sufficient for the travel intentions described above!

Validity and permitted duration of stay

The non-immigrant visa for training and study purposes is available in two versions:

Category S: single entry, up to 90 days stay, valid for 3 months from issue
Category M: multiple entries, up to 90 days stay per entry, validity: 1 year from issue

The validity of the visa specifies the period during which entry must take place. It starts on the day the visa is issued. The duration of stay begins on the day of arrival in Thailand. In most cases, the visa can be easily extended on site at an Immigration Office if there is justification and corresponding proof. The fees for an extension are reasonable.

Pupils

For students who intend to attend a Thai school, the Thai consulate requires an official letter of acceptance from the educational institution with letterhead, mark, stamp and signature of the principal. The letter must be sent to the Thai Embassy.

Students

Students planning to study or spend a semester abroad in Thailand require an official confirmation of admission from the university addressed to the embassy with letterhead, stamp and signature of the dean.

Interns

The following requirements apply to interns who are enrolled at a university:

Copy of the student ID card or a certificate of enrollment
Copy of the internship contract
Invitation from the Thai company where the internship will take place, with details of the period and type of activity
Extract from the trade register of the Thai company.

Lecturers and professors

Lecturers and professors are required to obtain a "Certificate of Eligibility for Non-Immigrant Lecturer-Form NIL" from the employing educational institution. Teachers provide proof of their intention to travel with an official confirmation that corresponds to a letter of invitation from the school in Thailand.
