  1. About 80% of the territory of Turkmenistan is occupied by the Karakum Desert, the area of which is about 350 thousand square kilometers. The name is spelled “Garagum” or “Gara Gum” in Turkmen. It means “black sand” in Turkic languages, where “kara” means “black” or “dark” and “kum” means “sand”. - “sand.” This name is related to the dark sand, rich in shale, which prevails in most of the desert area.

  8. Yangi-Kala Canyon is known for its colorful cliffs, creating stunning scenery. From Turkmen “Yangi-Kala” translates as “Fire Fortresses”. Indeed, the steep cliffs colored in white, yellow, ochre, purple and red shades look like stone-carved castles created by winds and rains. The canyons look especially impressive at sunset, when the surrounding landscape is dipped in bright red fiery colors.
