Tips for Travelers in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is a largely desert-like state that occupies a large part of the Arabian Peninsula in Asia. The country has a rich history dating back centuries. It is home to the cradle of Islam with its two cities of Mecca and Medina, which are the most revered by Muslims.
Before traveling through Saudi Arabia, here are some tips to keep in mind. Religion plays a key role in the local culture, and strict adherence to Islamic traditions characterizes the daily life of Saudis.

Best time to travel to Saudi Arabia

The best time to visit Saudi Arabia is from November to February. This is the peak tourist season, thanks to the pleasant daytime temperatures (around 28 °C on average) and cool evenings.
The summer months are also attractive for tourists, despite the heat. From July to August, when temperatures are at their highest, many people flock to the Red Sea coast to swim in the clear turquoise waters, snorkel near pristine reefs or simply relax on secluded beaches. Another plus: at this time of year, prices for flights and accommodation are also cheaper.
Saudi Arabia is therefore attractive for tourists at any time of year. The choice of time depends on your interests and possibilities.

Is Saudi Arabia safe for tourists?

Despite the Kingdom's active investment in infrastructure and security measures, there is still a risk of terrorist attacks in Saudi Arabia.
In addition to the threat of terrorist attacks, there are also other types of crime in Saudi Arabia, such as pickpocketing, fraud and robberies. Compared to neighboring Arab countries, however, the crime rate is lower. To minimize the risks, tourists in Saudi Arabia are advised to be extra vigilant - do not walk alone in deserted places, do not show valuable items, keep documents and money in a safe place. Particular attention should be paid to observing local laws and customs.
If you follow the precautions and respect Saudi culture, your trip here will be as safe as possible. And to feel even safer, you can use the services of a local guide.

Tips for travelers

  • Restrictions for non-Muslims

Access to the two holy cities of Muslims, Mecca and Medina, is only permitted to followers of Islam. Only in Mecca is the presence of non-Muslims completely prohibited. Violations are punished with fines and deportation. In Medina, non-Muslims are not permitted to visit the Prophet's Mosque and the adjacent square. In the other parts of the city, however, foreigners are generally tolerated if they behave in accordance with local customs.

  • Restrictions for women

The strictest regulations on the behavior of women are not always observed in practice. Many visa restrictions are relaxed for foreign women. In particular, there are no specific requirements for women to apply for a visa on the Saudi Arabian Tourism Authority website. Unmarried couples can travel together and stay in the same hotels.

Special rules apply for Muslim women going on pilgrimage. Women under the age of 45 must be accompanied by a male guardian. An exception applies for women over 45 years of age in organized groups with a notarized permission of the guardian.

  • Dress code

It is sufficient for women to cover their arms above the elbows and their legs above the knees with loose, opaque clothing. Men are advised to avoid tight-fitting clothing, shorts and T-shirts and to keep their shirts buttoned up.

  • Behavior in public places

It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the list of prohibitions on the Saudi Arabian Tourism Authority website before you travel. In particular, physical contact between men and women in public places is prohibited. It is also not permitted to discuss political or religious topics or talk about the private life of the person you are talking to.

  • Alcohol

There is a complete ban on the production, import, sale and consumption of alcohol in Saudi Arabia. This applies to both citizens of the country and tourists.

What useful things you should take with you when traveling in Saudi Arabia:

1. clothing. It is better for women to wear closed clothing if possible - dresses or tunics with long sleeves down to the ankles, scarves, capes. Long-sleeved shirts and pants that cover the legs are also recommended for men. Do not forget headgear such as panamas, caps, hats or hijabs.
2. an adapter and a socket adapter. In Saudi Arabia, standard English sockets with three rectangular holes are used. If you have a different type of plug, get a universal adapter.
3. sunglasses, caps, hats and umbrellas are essential for protection from the scorching sun. Also sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher.
4. a phrase book or audio course to learn Arabic. Knowing at least the basic phrases is very helpful when communicating with locals.
5. a detailed map of the area or a navigation device. Mobile internet may not be available in remote areas of the country.
6. a first aid kit with the necessary medication just in case.
