From November 1, 2024, Thailand's airports will begin using a biometric facial recognition system
Thailand has announced the introduction of an automated biometric identification system at six major international airports starting November 1, 2024. The initiative will use facial recognition technology to simplify passenger identification and reduce waiting times. According to the planned schedule, the system will be introduced for domestic flights from November 1, and biometrics will also be available for international travelers from December 1, 2024.
For foreign nationals holding a Hong Kong or Singapore passport, the system is available now. However, biometric checks may not apply to citizens of certain countries, this will be announced at a later date.
Airports where the system will be utilized: the Suvarnabhumi International Airports in Bangkok and Donmyang, as well as Chiang Mai, Maephaluang (Chiang Rai), Phuket International Airport and Hat Yai.
Biometric Check-in Process:
Passengers can go through the biometric check-in process at airport counters or self-check-in kiosks, where facial biometrics will be read along with passport scans. This data will be recorded once and will be used throughout the journey, so there is no need to re-submit a passport.
With the collection of biometric data, passengers can seamlessly go through check-in, baggage handling, security and immigration checks without having to present their ID card multiple times, greatly enhancing passenger comfort and convenience.
