Thailand plans to introduce a tourism levy by 2025
By 2025, Thailand intends to make changes to its tourism policy. The new government is considering introducing a special levy for foreign visitors in order to modernize tourism infrastructure and increase industry revenues.
Tourism Minister Soravong Tien Thong presented the following plan to implement the levy:
- Higher rate for tourists arriving by air transport
- Reduced rate for travelers using land or sea transportation
- Fee exemption for children under two years of age and diplomatic passport holders
According to the minister, the funds raised will be used to develop infrastructure and improve safety for tourists.
In addition to the introduction of the levy, the government is considering the possibility of resuming programs to stimulate domestic tourism. In particular, the revival of the "We Travel Together" project, which proved effective during the pandemic, is being discussed.
Thailand aims to achieve a tourism revenue of three trillion baht. A number of activities are planned to achieve this target:
- Organization of marathons
- Organization of the Loy Kratong Festival
- New Year's Eve celebration
It is worth noting that the idea of a tourist levy has been considered before. The previous government rejected it due to pressure from representatives of the tourism business. However, the current administration believes that the long-term benefits of this measure outweigh the possible short-term inconveniences.
The introduction of a tourist levy may affect the cost of traveling to Thailand after 2025. Potential travelers are advised to consider these changes when planning future trips to the country.
