Registration in China
Rules for travelers in China

In China, registration is mandatory for all foreigners in the country, regardless of the purpose of the trip. Registration is usually required within 24 hours after crossing the border at the local security office (police station).
Also, during the entire trip, it is mandatory to have a document proving your identity. You must have your passport with a valid visa. If you lose your passport, contact the German Embassy in China as soon as possible.
Purpose of the trip and registration procedure
If you are staying at a hotel as a tourist, registration is done automatically after check-in. If your trip is not for tourism purposes, you or your host are required to follow the registration procedures.
For example, if you work for a company in China, your employer is required to inform the police about your employment.
Owners of student visa (X1 visa), work visa (Z visa), residence permit (D visa), or journalist visa (J1 visa) must register with the local police within 30 days of entering the country. After the registration process, a long-term residence permit is issued, replacing the initial visa.
Transit passengers staying in China for more than one day are also required to register. The 24-hour rule also applies to them.
Why do you need to register?
China aims to reduce the number of illegal foreigners residing or working in the country. Therefore, immigration and security authorities may check the purposes of foreigners' trips. It is recommended to register in China as soon as possible, but no later than 24 hours. Penalties may be imposed for delays. In addition, there may be difficulties if you are applying for a long-term stay and are not officially registered.
