Student and Business Visa for International Internships

China no longer offers a internship visa as a separate visa category. Those who come to China for an internship and gaining experience abroad must have either student visa (X2 visa) or business visa (M visa).

Important Notice

Starting from 2023, China temporarily exempts applicants for short-term visas for single and double entry for up to 180 days from the obligation to provide fingerprints. This rule is valid until December 31, 2025.
However, for multiple entries or long-term visas with a stay of more than 180 days, fingerprints are still required. Additional information can be found here.

What visa does an intern need to get?

Student visa X2

The student visa (X2 visa) is intended for students who have been admitted to a Chinese school or university. To obtain a student visa, you need to provide an invitation or a document confirming enrollment in an educational institution.

Business visa M

The business visa (M visa) is intended for interns who are undergoing training or an internship in a company in China. In this case, applicants must have an official invitation from the place of internship.

Both types of visas that replace the intern visa usually entitle the holder to stay for up to 180 days (6 months). It is important that the duration of the internship is specified in the invitation letter.
