Bali has started charging a tourist tax

From 14 February 2024, the magical island of Bali, one of Indonesia's most popular destinations for travellers, will see a tourism tax introduced by the authorities to support the island's sustainable development come into effect. The move has caused mixed reactions and a storm of controversy among travellers, but it is a milestone in shaping Bali's sustainable tourism industry.

Every foreign tourist arriving in Bali from other countries or provinces in Indonesia is now required to pay a fee of 150,000 Indonesian rupiah, or about US$10. This fee can be paid either upon entry to the island or in advance through an online service, receiving a QR code as proof of payment. The funds collected from the tax are planned to be used to protect the environment and preserve Bali's cultural heritage.
There are exceptions to this rule. For example, diplomats and some holders of special types of visas are exempted from paying the tax. But for most foreign visitors, the introduction of the tourist tax has become an integral part of travelling to this magical island.

Apart from the financial aspects, Bali authorities explained that the introduction of the new tax is due to the need to cope with the growing amount of rubbish on the island, which has become a serious environmental problem. It is a reminder to be responsible to the nature and culture of the place we visit.

While the introduction of the tourist tax may cause some inconvenience to visitors, it also represents an opportunity to contribute to preserving the unique character and beauty of the island of Bali.
