Do I need a visa to Indonesia?
In 2015, Indonesia amended its immigration laws to grant visa-free travel to many countries. However, at the beginning of the pandemic, visa-free entry was closed to many foreign nationals, including Germany.
In 2022, Indonesia resumed visa-free access only for its ASEAN partners, but for a maximum of 30 days. Visa-free access cannot be extended or changed to any other type of visa. However, visa-free travel is expected to be reinstated for many other countries in the future.
Foreign nationals who are not allowed visa-free entry must apply for a visa, regardless of the purpose of the trip or its duration. This can be an e-visa, visa on arrival or consular visa.
A pre-travel visa is also required if the intention to travel is non-tourist and non-business (e.g. semester abroad/study, internship, for work, etc.).
Most commonly used visa types for visiting and residing in Indonesia
A Visa on Arrival (VOA) can be purchased at the airport. It is designed for a maximum stay of only 60 days, after which you must leave Indonesia.
The electronic visa on arrival (e-VOA) can be applied for online before traveling, then you must present the confirmation upon arrival to have it stamped in your passport. The online visa will save time at the airport on arrival and then when renewing the visa.
There are two types of e-VOA: for tourism B1, business travel B2. The period of stay on an e-VOA is 30 days and the validity period is 90 days from the date of receipt. The visa can be immediately extended for another 30 days.
The Indonesia Transit Visa is designed for transit passengers traveling through Indonesia. The visa allows you to stay in the country for up to 7 days. The Indonesian transit visa is issued upon arrival: travelers apply at the border control at the airport or other entry point to the country. The transit visa allows travelers to take advantage of a short stay in the country before continuing their journey.
For transit through Indonesia, it is possible to apply for an e-VOA electronic tourist visa on arrival instead of a transit visa to avoid standing in long queues at the airport.
This visa authorizes travel for tourist or business purposes.
On January 9, 2024, the Indonesian Immigration Service introduced new types of single entry visas:

A residence period of 5 years is allowed for investments of US$2.5 million and a residence period of 10 years is allowed for investments of US$5 million. The visa can be extended.
A permanent KITAP residence permit can be obtained no earlier than 2 years after obtaining KITAS status. This short period applies only to mixed marriages where one spouse is an Indonesian citizen. Other KITAS holders must be in KITAS status for 5 years to receive KITAP.
KITAP is issued for 5 years and after that it is usually renewable indefinitely. KITAP can be used to apply for Indonesian citizenship.
Tourist tax in Bali
If you plan to visit Bali, don't forget to pay the tourist tax. It is compulsory for all tourists arriving on the island.
From February 14, 2024, all foreign visitors arriving on the island of Bali, including children will be required to pay a mandatory tourist tax called Bali Levy of 150,000 Indonesian rupiah ($10). The tax is aimed at preserving the natural environment and cultural heritage of the region.
When traveling to other regions in Indonesia, you will not have to pay the tax, which is only levied once while traveling in Bali. In addition, if you return to Bali as part of the same trip, you will not need to pay the tax again. It is important to remember that the tourist tax is not a substitute for a visa. You may need to apply for a tourist visa to Indonesia.
Exceptions to the tourist tax apply to Indonesian citizens and long-term residents. If you believe you fall into these categories, you can apply for a tourist tax exemption prior to your arrival.
Who needs to apply for a visa?
Indonesia has visa-free travel with ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) partners. Citizens of these countries are allowed visa-free entry into Indonesia for 30 days. They can also obtain a visa on arrival (VOA), apply for an electronic visa on arrival (e-VOA) or apply for an electronic visitor visa.
Citizens from more than 90 countries, including Germany, have the option to obtain a visa on arrival (VOA) to Indonesia, or to issue an electronic visa on arrival (e-VOA) or an electronic visitor visa.
If a foreign national is not eligible for visa-free entry or there is no possibility to apply for an electronic visa (e-VOA and visitor visa), they will need to apply at the Indonesian embassy or consulate in their home country. The consular office will provide the necessary instructions and information on the visa application procedure for travel to Indonesia.

Five steps to your visa to Indonesia
Planning a trip to Indonesia?
Our FAQs, visa information, entry requirements, and country and consular information will help you quickly and easily find all the information you need to visit this wonderful country.
What is an electronic visa on arrival?
Issuing an electronic visa on arrival (e-VOA) is a fast and convenient way to obtain authorization to enter a country. This process can be done online before you travel, saving you a lot of time when you arrive at the airport. Simply show proof of your e-VOA to get it stamped into your passport.
The e-VOA provides two types of visas: B1 for tourism and B2 for business travel. With an e-VOA you can stay in the country for up to 30 days, the visa is valid for 90 days from the date of receipt. You also have the option to extend your visa for another 30 days.
What are the differences between Indonesian visa on arrival, traditional visa and e-visa?
Visas on arrival usually do not require pre-clearance, but the process is inconvenient. Applicants must prepare all necessary documents in advance and carry them with them while traveling. In addition, entry into Indonesia is only allowed through certain border crossings, where long waits in airport queues may be required.
Traditional pre-travel paper visas also have their disadvantages, as they require a personal visit to an Indonesian consulate or embassy (often several times) and a long time to process the application.
This is why many travelers prefer to apply for an e-visa. These visas can be obtained entirely online, eliminating the need to visit the embassy or deal with immigration officers in person.
What documents do I need to show when entering Indonesia?
- Valid passport
- Approved visa (unless visa-free entry is authorized)
- Electronic Customs Declaration Form (e-CD)
- You may also be asked to present your return or onward flight ticket at immigration control.
Can I transit through Indonesia without a visa?
Passengers can transit through Indonesia without a visa if they meet certain criteria. Citizens of some countries can enter the country without a visa for up to 30 days. For other travelers, the possibility of visa-free transit depends on the length of their trip as well as their intentions to pass through customs control. The rules differ for different airports.
Visa-free transit is available at Sukarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK), the main airport serving Indonesia's capital Jakarta. Travelers can transit through this airport without a visa if the following conditions are met: the connection does not exceed 24 hours, the traveler does not go through immigration control, does not move between terminals and remains in a designated transit area. There is also the possibility of visa-free transit at some other airports for up to 8 hours under similar restrictions.
However, if the traveler needs to re-check baggage for the next flight, move to another terminal, or leave the airport for another reason, a valid Indonesian visa will be required.
What is the length of stay for the e-visa on arrival and e-visa visitor visa?
The period of stay under the electronic visa on arrival is 30 days with the possibility of extension for another 30 days immediately upon arrival. The electronic single entry visitor visa allows a stay of 60 days, renewable twice, each time for 60 days. Thus, e-visa holders can stay in Indonesia for up to 60 days on arrival and e-visa visitor visa holders can stay for up to 180 days with prior extension. This provides more flexibility for tourists and travelers planning an extended stay in Indonesia.
What are the benefits of an e-visa to Indonesia?
The e-visa application is done online, eliminating the need for a personal visit to an embassy or consulate, saving time and simplifying the visa application process.
After a successful application, the visa is provided as an electronic file that can be saved on a device. Travelers can print the e-visa and present it to border officers upon entry into the country, ensuring a smoother and faster border control process.
After receiving the e-visa, travelers have 90 days to enter the country.
