Visa to Macau

Macau, a Special Administrative Region (SAR) within the People's Republic of China, has its own visa regime, which is different from the visa policy of mainland China. It is important to keep in mind that a valid Chinese visa does not authorize entry into Macau. You may need a separate visa application process when traveling to Macau, even if you have a Chinese visa.

Today, Macau has visa-free travel with many countries, making it easier to visit the region. Citizens of these countries are allowed to visit Macau without a visa for up to 30, 60 or 90 days, depending on their nationality. This makes traveling to Macau convenient and affordable for short-term visits such as leisure and business travel.

However, if your stay involves a longer period of time or you are not a citizen of a country with which Macau has a visa-free agreement, you will need to apply for a visa in advance.

Since Macau is part of the People's Republic of China, you should apply for a visa through the Chinese diplomatic mission in your country. You can also apply to an accredited visa agency.

Citizens of many countries do not require a visa to visit Macau if traveling for tourism or business for 30 to 90 days, and up to 180 days for some countries. Visa-free travel to Macau is available for 81 countries.

Citizens of Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Nepal need to apply for a visa in advance, including for short-term tourist and business trips.

Foreign nationals of the remaining countries can obtain a visa on arrival. Visitors who do not require a visa or entry permit can apply for a visa on arrival at the “visa center” of the border crossing point upon arrival in Macau. Once the application is approved, the stay is for a maximum of 30 days.

48-hour visa-free transit in Macau

Passengers who normally require a visa staying and departing from Macau International Airport to transit to other destinations (including mainland China) within 48 hours may enter and remain in Macau without a visa or entry permit during this period.

If you are planning a long-term stay in Macau, such as for the purpose of study, work, investment or other activities, you need to apply for the appropriate type of visa in Macau.

As of July 1, 2010, citizens of these countries need to apply for a Macau visa in advance through a Chinese embassy or consulate instead of applying for a visa on arrival. The exception is for nationals who hold a Hong Kong identity card.

Citizens of other countries not included in these lists can obtain a visa to Macau upon arrival. These include countries of South America, Africa, former CIS countries and others.
