The visa requirement in Azerbaijan also applies to transit travelers. If you pass through the landlocked country in Western Asia on your way to any destination country, you need a transit visa. Transit through Azerbaijan is a good option, for example, if you are heading to neighboring countries like Russia, Georgia, or Iran.

Both for air travelers and individuals passing through Azerbaijan by land (e.g. by motorcycle or car), a transit visa is available when meeting the application requirements. Stopovers and stays without a visa are not allowed. An exception is the airport transit at Baku Airport, which is visa-free for Germans and nationals of some other countries.

What are the requirements for a visa application?

The Azerbaijani Embassy will only issue you a visa for transit purposes if you submit the complete application documents (passport, passport photos, application form) and prove your onward journey. As a rule, proof of a main visa for the third country and valid tickets are required. Proof of citizenship is sufficient for your return to your home country. Visas for most visa-required countries, including Russia, Iran, and Georgia, are obtained through us, as is your travel permit for Azerbaijan.

If no visa is required for your destination, you may need a tourist visa for Azerbaijan if the authorities do not accept an alternative proof to the main visa. For more information, please contact the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan directly if necessary.

Stay and Validity

Please consider in your travel planning that the transit visa is valid for a maximum of 5 days and only for single entry. For longer stays, you need to apply for a tourist visa, which is valid for up to 30 days. If you intend to travel through the country on both the outbound and return journey or even multiple times, you need to make appropriate visa arrangements. Please also note the current travel advisories of the Federal Foreign Office of Germany to get information about possible border closures. Crossing the border into Iran, Russia, and Georgia is usually unproblematic. However, the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan is closed.
