India Internship Visa
Visa for interns in India - which is the right one?
India offers many opportunities to find an internship. Have you already been accepted by a company or organization? Now it's time to make travel preparations for your stay abroad, including the visa application. Because in India, as in many other countries, visas are compulsory for foreign travelers. Which visa is the right one for an internship in the country in South Asia depends primarily on the type of internship position and the expected salary of the applicant.
There is no internship visa for India as a separate visa category. Anyone completing an internship in India will receive either an entry visa, a work visa, a student visa or a business visa. Please note: Entry with a tourist visa is only permitted for tourist travel purposes. You are obliged to state the reason for your trip truthfully in the visa application.

Internship with payment
If you are completing your internship with a company or organization in India and receive a salary, you will need a work visa for your stay. The work visa is also the appropriate travel permit if you are completing a voluntary social year in India and claiming a maintenance allowance.
Internship without pay
The entry visa is the right choice for unpaid internships in India. You will also receive this if you are involved in social projects or voluntary work as a volunteer.
Internship as part of a degree course
Are you planning a semester abroad or a longer period of study in India? Would you like to do an internship during your study abroad to gain valuable work experience? A student visa is required to enter India. As a student, you are permitted to do an unpaid internship in India. Paid employment is usually problematic, as this usually requires a work visa. The work permit is not included in the student visa. This can only be applied for at the Indian diplomatic missions abroad, i.e. the Indian embassy or the Indian consulate general in Germany or in the applicant's home country. A permit for unpaid internships, on the other hand, can be obtained locally. For more information, please navigate to our detailed page on the student visa for India.
