Sri Lanka introduces new electronic visa system and abolishes ETAs
Sri Lanka is set to introduce a new e-visa system designed to simplify the process of obtaining a visa to visit the country. According to information published in the local media, the country is also considering introducing a mass visa-free regime.
The Sri Lankan government's Department of Immigration and Emigration introduced the e-visa from April 17, 2024, replacing the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). There have been changes in the validity of visas from 1 year to 10 years, their cost and conditions for obtaining them.
To apply for a visa, you need to register on the official Sri Lanka e-visa website, complete the online application form, upload a photo and a copy of the main page of your passport. You can also use the services of a professional agency, they will help you in this process. The visa platform notes that all visitors must apply for an e-visa before entering the country.
According to Sri Lankan authorities, the introduction of e-visa will increase the number of tourists, provide a convenient and safe environment to visit the country, and boost the tourism industry.
As the Sri Lankan government has entered into an agreement with VFS Global to manage and issue e-visas, additional costs have been incurred. The company charges a service fee of US$18.50 for processing each visa in addition to the new ministerial fee, as well as a bank transaction fee. The cost of obtaining an e-visa to enter Sri Lanka for European tourists is now US$93.50 (€88). Previously, the fee for an ETA electronic entry permit was US$50.
Critics argue that increasing visa fees could make Sri Lanka less competitive and scare away potential visitors. To prevent this, Harin Fernando, Sri Lanka's tourism minister, confirms that the government is considering making it easier for tourists from different nations to enter the country. A proposal to waive visa fees for e-visa for visitors from over 50 countries is now being drafted. The proposal will be presented to the Council of Ministers shortly.
At the moment Sri Lanka has temporarily waived visa fees until April 30 for citizens of seven countries (China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Russia and Thailand), this list may be expanded soon.
