Do I need a visa to Sri Lanka?

Citizens of most countries, including Germany, are required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before traveling to Sri Lanka. This authorization allows you to stay in the country for up to 30 days. If you are planning a longer stay, however, a traditional visa is required. Make sure you familiarize yourself with the requirements and process of obtaining a visa or ETA in advance so that your trip goes smoothly!

The following types of visas can be issued for Sri Lanka:

ЕТА

An ETA is an official authorisation for a short-term visit to Sri Lanka that is issued electronically. ETA holders will be issued a short-term visa for 30 days upon arrival in the country. ETA allows foreign nationals to enter Sri Lanka for tourism (ETA Tourist), business (ETA Business) or transit (ETA Transit) purposes without the need to obtain a traditional visa through a consulate.

Renewal: can be renewed twice, each time for 30 days, totalling a maximum stay of 90 days.

Visa validity: once issued, the ETA is valid for 6 months, during which time you can enter Sri Lanka.

Tourist visa

The tourist visa is intended for those who plan to visit Sri Lanka for leisure, sightseeing, visiting friends and relatives, receiving medical services, participating in cultural and sporting events for a short period of time. The visa can be issued for single, double or multiple visits.

Period of stay: up to 30 days, renewable.

Extension: Can be extended initially for 60 days and then for a further 30 days, allowing a stay of up to 90 days.

Visa validity: Usually valid for 6 months from the date of issue.

Business visa

The Business Visa is for foreign nationals travelling to Sri Lanka for short-term business purposes. The visa can also be issued for single, double or multiple visits.

Period of stay: initially up to 30 days.

Extension: can be extended depending on the purpose and requirements of the visit.

Visa validity: usually valid for 6 months.

Transit visa

A transit visa is a permit for short-term entry into Sri Lanka for a foreign national in transit to another destination.

Period of stay: usually authorises a stay of up to 48 hours.

The visa is valid for the short time required to transit through the country.

Diplomatic and official visa

The visa is available to diplomats and officials attached to foreign missions in Sri Lanka, as well as their spouses and dependents.

Visa validity: one year with a stay limit of 90 days per visit (multiple entries during the visa validity period).

Resident visa

A Resident Visa is an authorisation granting foreign nationals of Sri Lanka special rights to reside in Sri Lanka for specific purposes. It is issued to grant the privileges of residence within a particular resident visa category, provided that the authorised authorities are satisfied that their stay and activities in Sri Lanka are not contrary to the interests of the local population.

Validity of the visa: for a period of one year or a period of time recommended by the relevant authority.

Renewal: it may be renewed annually.

Visa under the programme ‘MY HOUSE OF DESIRE’

Visa for senior foreign nationals (55 years and above) who wish to stay in Sri Lanka for a long period of time as a resident.

Visa validity: for a period of 2 years with the possibility of extension.
