There are four types of visas that authorise entry and stay in Sri Lanka.

1. Visitor visa:

Starting September 3, 2024 citizens of 35 countries, including Germany, will be able to visit the country without a visa. This innovation will be valid for six months. Under the new programme, tourists will be able to get a free tourist visa for up to 30 days. These countries are summarised below:

Some countries, such as Singapore, Maldives and Seychelles, are exempted from visa requirements for short trips (up to 30 days) to Sri Lanka. Citizens of other countries generally need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before entry, which can be applied for online.

The ETA allows a stay of up to 30 days and can be extended for a further 90 days after arrival.

The following documents are usually required to apply for a visa to Sri Lanka (including ETA):

• Passport: passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into Sri Lanka.
• Online application: a completed visa application form.
• Photograph: normally a photograph is not required to apply for an ETA, but may be required when applying for other types of visas.
