India has redesigned e-visa for the convenience of tourists
In October 2024, India redesigned its electronic visa (e-Visa). The electronic authorization now looks different and has become more structured and clearer. Travelers who have the old ETA/e-Visa can still present it upon arrival in India, and download the updated version. It may be recalled that e-visas are available to tourists and business travelers from 172 countries planning to visit India for tourism and leisure, business or medical travel.
The new e-permit form will contain the following information laid out in two sheets:
- The type of ETA authorization requested. For example, “ETA for an electronic tourist visa for 30 days”.
- The unique identification code for the application: The 12-digit alphanumeric code that corresponds to your ETA application.
- Application status information labeled “Granted,” including the ETA number and date of issuance.
- Personal information and details of the e-visa fee paid.
- Photo and QR code for verification by Indian immigration officials.
- Explanatory information about the visa, including e-visa issue and expiration dates, and other details for correct use of ETA at entry.
- Important instructions and information for ETA holders.
The new design greatly simplifies the document verification process and includes improved security features aimed at protecting personal data. The innovations are designed to improve the efficiency of visa processing and control for tourists traveling to India.
However, it should be borne in mind that having a validated ETA authorization is not a final guarantee of receiving an e-visa to India on arrival. The decision always rests with the Border Security Officer.
