Business visa to Russia - what is it for?

You are planning a business stay in Russia or accompanying your spouse on a business trip? Before departure by car or plane, you need a business visa (Engl. Business Visa). You are required to submit a visa application and a number of other documents to a Russian foreign mission. If the application is approved, you will receive the visa in the form of a sticker in your passport.

Types of visas for business trips to Russia

The economic nation Russia distinguishes between several types of business trips and issues business visas for the following purposes:

Requirements for the Business Visa

When applying for a visa for business purposes, you need a business invitation, also known as a Visa Support Letter or business voucher. The invitation letter is usually issued by the inviting business partner or hosting company, the Federal Migration Service (FMS), or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

Special requirements apply when applying for multiple entry visas. Please read our explanations below.

Required information in the company invitation

The following information is required in a business voucher from a Russian company: tax number, date, personal information of the traveler (last name, date of birth, nationality, passport number, passport validity), entry and exit dates, exact travel route, desired type of visa (e.g. single entry), stamp and signature of the CEO.

Business Visa including Invitation - what does that mean?

issued in cooperation with a partner company in Russia (for stays of up to 30 or 90 days or with a visa validity of 1, 2, 3, or 5 years with a maximum stay of 180 days per year). Please note that with the multiple business visa, you may not stay in Russia for more than 90 days within 6 months.

Requirements for the multiple-entry visa:

1 year: You have entered the Russian Federation once in the last 12 months with a single or double entry visa
2-year visa: You have traveled to Russia at least once within the last 12 months with two consecutive 1-year visas.
3-year visa: You have been in the Russian Federation at least once within the last 12 months with a 2-year visa.
5-year visa: You have entered Russia at least once within the last 12 months with a 3-year or 5-year visa.

FMS Invitation

in DIN A6 format
issued by the Ministry for stays of up to 1 year.

Telex Invitation

for stays of up to 1 year: it is an electronic form of the FMS invitation.
You and the Russian consulate in Germany will receive a Telex number as a reference.

It is not necessary to prove previous visits to Russia for the issuance of visas including FMS invitation/ Telex.

How long is the entry permit valid?

Business visas for Russia are valid for up to 5 years and allow stays of up to 180 days per year. Russian authorities distinguish visas for single, double, and multiple entries. The actual approved duration of stay is decided individually by the Russian embassy for each applicant. Typically, the validity period of the visa is based on the information in the invitation letter. For a business visa for single entry or double entry, a maximum stay of 90 days is allowed. For a business visa for multiple entries, a maximum stay of 180 days is allowed, with the visa being valid for a period of 3, 6, or 12 months. The 180-day stay cannot be continuous. Only 90 days are allowed per half year.

Please note that with the multiple business visa, you are not allowed to stay in Russia for more than 90 days within 6 months, with a visa validity of 1, 2, 3 or 5 years with a maximum stay of 180 days per year.
